Reynolds American Invests $3.2 Billion in U.S. Manufacturing

On Thursday, Reynolds American made an announcement about its plan to invest $3.2 billion in manufacturing and job creation in the United States.

The company has teamed up with media outlet Semafor to spotlight this significant investment, which was introduced at a sponsored event hosted by Semafor. This initiative is part of Reynolds’ broader strategy to foster a smoke-free America.

Over the next four years, the investment is aimed at enhancing its mission of producing innovative smokeless alternatives tailored to the preferences of adult smokers. The move is anticipated to create around 2,000 new jobs.

Reynolds, through its partnership with Semafor, emphasized the economic benefits of this investment, including support for farmers and progression toward a smoke-free environment.

Currently, Reynolds is shifting focus away from traditional cigarettes. Reports indicate that around 85% of its annual research and development budget, exceeding $100 million, is now allocated to smokeless products suited for the diverse needs of adult nicotine consumers.

The company is targeting a largely smokeless product line by 2035 while continuing to support its traditional tobacco operations and farmer network amid evolving global demands.

Winston-Salem, North Carolina, home to Reynolds’ robust R&D team, has seen a surge in philanthropic activities and investments geared toward future workforce development. The company also has a significant manufacturing presence in Clarksville, Tennessee, which has seen the addition of more than 50 new manufacturing jobs.

As a leading purchaser of tobacco leaf in the U.S., Reynolds supports hundreds of farmers across six states and is calling for updated federal regulations to keep pace with innovations in smokeless alternatives.

The company emphasized, “Our $3.2 billion investment in a smoke-free future is only feasible if there’s a regulatory pathway to support it.”
