Primark Opening in Manhattan Draws Huge Crowds
Fast fashion is really making waves right now.
On May 8, the opening of Primark, a popular Irish retailer known for its stylish yet affordable clothing and home goods, attracted a massive crowd at 150 West 34th Street in Manhattan.
It’s estimated that around 3,000 bargain hunters lined up—some as early as 3 a.m.—eager to snag their favorite items and be among the first to visit this flagship location, especially as New Yorkers continue to seek budget-friendly options amidst rising living costs.
Quintasha Watson, who drives a bus for the MTA, and Victoria Crowell, a recent college grad from Harlem, are already devoted Primark shoppers. They’ve often driven to the American Dream store in New Jersey, visiting three times a month because of the unbeatable prices. Crowell noted, “I’ve picked up bags for $6 and pants for around $10, even some clothes for my niece for about $8.” It seems this kind of accessibility is a game-changer for many families.
Watson added, “You can find a full costume for under $20. It’s practical, especially in a city like New York where everything seems pricey—rent, transportation…all of it.” She’s adamant that looking decent doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg; many shirts are less than $10. “You can get an entire interview outfit looking like you spent a fortune, but really, you could spend just $50.”
This new store joins similar retailers like H&M and Zara in New York, featuring both self-checkout and assistance at registers. This location marks Primark’s fourth store within the city and its 40th in the U.S.
Notable figures like Sarah Jessica Parker and Emily Ratajkowski attended a pre-opening event, where prices are reportedly around $10 on average. T-shirts start at just $5, and women’s denim can be found for as low as $12.
Even iconic spots like the Empire State Building are joining in, illuminating in Primark’s signature aqua color for the occasion.
On the opening day, attendees enjoyed entertainment, snacks from Joe’s Coffee, and plenty of excitement for the new shopping haven. It was a festive start to the morning.
Beatrize Villanova, a Brazilian on vacation in the city, was thrilled to see so many trendy options at Primark. “This store is fresh and full of everything that’s currently in vogue,” she said.
Kevin Tulip, President of Primark US, remarked, “Herald Square is essentially the heart of fashion in the U.S. and worldwide. We’re excited to open this 54,000-square-foot flagship store here.”
Naquan Peterson, a 29-year-old Brooklyn security guard, found the opening serendipitous. He picked out an outfit for his baby’s gender reveal, along with some Knicks gear, emphasizing how Primark’s prices—approximately $60 for his haul—simply can’t be matched elsewhere. “Life’s tough for all of us these days. You have to prioritize what you can afford,” he stated, comparing it to pricier retailers. “At Macy’s, you might get a couple of items, but you’re looking at a $200 bill easily.”
