Dwayne Johnson, known as “The Rock,” made quite an impression at the 2026 Met Gala held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Alongside his wife, he shared thoughts about donning skirts at the event.
His wife, Lauren Hashian, looked stunning in a flowing white gown. Johnson, on the other hand, chose to wear an elegant black mohair tailcoat with a bow tie, paired with a designer pleated skirt by Thom Browne. When a reporter inquired about how it felt to wear a skirt, he enthusiastically replied, “It feels so good!”
Embracing Cultural Heritage
Reflecting on cultural norms, Johnson pointed out that in Polynesian culture, wearing skirts or lavalavas is common. “Look, in our culture, we rock lavalavas and we rock skirts,” he explained. As someone of Samoan descent and a member of a wrestling family, he emphasized the traditional significance.
Johnson stated, “The manliest men, I’m not saying I’m one of them, but the manliest men wear lavalavas and skirts.” This remark showcases his pride in his heritage while challenging conventional views on masculinity.
Designer Details
Thom Browne currently features several “men’s skirts” on his website, including the wool seersucker pleated skirt closely resembling Johnson’s, priced at approximately $2,500. Browne is known for pushing gender norms through fashion and even made headlines in 2020 with a politically charged scarf that supported Joe Biden’s campaign.
Interestingly, Johnson wasn’t the only one breaking fashion boundaries at the Gala. Several notable figures, including Sam Smith, were also seen challenging traditional attire with their own bold choices.
Highlighting Diversity
The event also celebrated representation, with various transgender individuals in attendance. Lux, known for being actor Pedro Pascal’s brother, opted for a more traditional gala look while Aaron Rose Phillip received accolades as the first black transgender woman with quadriplegic cerebral palsy signed to a major modeling agency.
