Knicks Shine in Anunoby’s Absence
PHILADELPHIA — With OG Anunoby sidelined, the need for replacements became quite clear.
The Knicks rose to the occasion, showcasing their depth effectively.
They found support from their starting lineup, with Mikal Bridges scoring 23 points—his second-highest postseason total. Off the bench, Landry Shamet contributed 15 points, stepping up after being away from the rotation.
This shift in responsibility throughout the roster proved beneficial as the Knicks secured a 108-94 victory over the 76ers in Game 3, taking a commanding 3-0 lead in the series.
“This was definitely a team effort,” remarked Jalen Brunson. “Of course, we’re looking forward to having everyone healthy again. But it’s crucial for the team to maintain the right mindset and do what it takes to win.”
Unfortunately, Friday was too early for Anunoby, who is nursing a right hamstring strain sustained in Game 2. Imaging indicated a “very mild” strain, leading to some optimism that he won’t be out for long.
The Knicks didn’t provide much detail on his recovery progress or whether he could partake in any court activities.
Myles McBride filled in for Anunoby but struggled to find his rhythm. Conversely, Shamet shone in this opportunity, logging more minutes than McBride—26 against 21—and hitting 5 of 6 field goals, including 2 of 3 from beyond the arc.
“Landry hadn’t played much in the playoffs,” coach Mike Brown noted. “It’s been a good stretch since he last saw significant game time. His performance tonight was crucial for us on both ends.”
“When we found ourselves in a pinch, we needed a boost, and Landry delivered,” he added.
Anunoby has been notably consistent for the Knicks this postseason, averaging 20.3 points per game, coupled with a remarkable shooting percentage of 61.9 percent overall and 53.8 percent from three-point territory. His defensive efforts against key players have also been commendable.
Bridges had to step up defensively in Anunoby’s absence, particularly against Paul George, who managed 15 points in the first quarter but was held scoreless thereafter after missing all his shots.
“Everyone elevated their game,” said Josh Hart. “The next player up concept is essential, and it just opens up more chances. Mikal really stepped up, and McBride gave it his all. Landry offered tremendous minutes in every aspect. Adversity brings out the best in us.”
