Experts raise concerns about the CDC's handling of the hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship

CDC’s Response to Hantavirus Outbreak Under Scrutiny

NEW YORK — The outbreak of hantavirus on a cruise ship has raised questions about the response from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Unlike past incidents, there hasn’t been a rapid deployment of disease investigators, nor timely updates to the public or healthcare providers.

Recent reports indicate that the CDC’s visibility in managing this outbreak has been quite limited, leaving much of the response to experts outside the U.S. “We seem to have things under very good control,” President Donald Trump stated, but experts suggest that the situation remains serious. Fortunately, hantavirus isn’t easily transmitted like COVID-19, which has somewhat contained the spread.

Lawrence Gostin, a public health authority from Georgetown University, noted, “The CDC is not even a player,” highlighting a significant shift from the agency’s previous role in global health crises.

This hantavirus outbreak, described by Dr. Jeanne Marrazzo from the Infectious Diseases Society of America as a “sentinel event,” raises concerns about the country’s readiness for adapting to health threats. “We are not prepared,” she added.

Outbreak Details

Last month, a 70-year-old Dutch man fell ill while cruising from Argentina to Antarctica and died within a week. A few more cases soon followed, including the man’s wife and another woman from Germany, both of whom also succumbed.

Hantavirus was first identified on May 2 as a cause of illness, prompting the World Health Organization (WHO) to announce an outbreak. About 24 Americans were on board the ship, with some disembarking and others still on board.

WHO Takes Charge

For years, the CDC has worked closely with the WHO in addressing outbreaks, but this time the WHO is taking the lead in response. It assessed the risk of the outbreak, determining it does not pose a pandemic threat.

Dr. Jennifer Nuzzo from Brown University remarked, “This isn’t a monumental threat to the U.S.,” yet criticized the CDC for appearing ineffective during this crisis.

Chaos Before Trump

This situation followed a tumultuous period where the Trump administration distanced itself from the WHO and limited the CDC’s interaction with international teams. Thousands of CDC positions have been cut, impacting the agency’s ability to respond effectively.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. mentioned efforts to refocus the CDC on infectious diseases and to improve public trust.

Current CDC Actions

The CDC isn’t entirely absent; it recently reported the risk to Americans as “extremely low” and asserted its leadership in global health security. However, experts criticized this communication as lacking humility, with the acting director acknowledging ongoing coordination with federal and international authorities.

Arizona officials learned about one American, who had left the cruise and was symptom-free, returning to the state. The CDC has since shared technical information with WHO, while monitoring the health of remaining passengers.

On Friday, officials confirmed plans to send a team to the Canary Islands where the ship is docked and another to Offutt Air Force Base for possible quarantines.

Looking Back at COVID-19

Some experts are drawing comparisons to a COVID-19 outbreak on the Diamond Princess, where the CDC played a central role by deploying personnel and conducting evacuations. While some criticism of that response exists, many agree that the CDC was proactive at that time. This current outbreak reflects a much quieter, subdued CDC.

Policy changes under the Trump administration have moved towards bilateral agreements with individual countries instead of leveraging the collaborative power of the WHO. Gostin expressed concern that this approach is insufficient for managing global health challenges.
