Sen. Tommy Tuberville: The Democratic Party Glorifies Political Violence

Assassination Attempt on Trump Raises Concerns

Recently, the United States faced its third assassination attempt on President Donald J. Trump since 2024. What was meant to be a lighthearted evening at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner shifted dramatically, resembling something out of a horror film. Fortunately, law enforcement intervened and arrested the assailant before any harm was done.

This incident is part of a broader pattern. It seems that political violence is becoming increasingly associated with the Democratic Party. Since Trump emerged on the political scene over a decade ago, the reactions from some Democrats have been alarming. A troubling number are seemingly willing to resort to violence against those they oppose. This was evident after the shooting of the CEO of United Healthcare two years ago, when figures like journalist Taylor Lorenz expressed, well, I’d say, inappropriate support for the shooter. Then there was the left’s reaction to the Charlie Kirk murder case last year. And each time an assassin attempts to target Trump, we see similar patterns unfold.

Understanding how we arrived at this point is not particularly difficult. Democrats have made numerous reckless comments about Trump and the Republican Party. Just look at the claims: former Vice President Kamala Harris labeled Trump a “fascist,” while President Biden referred to him as a “threat to democracy.” Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez even branded him a “rapist,” and Rep. Jasmine Crockett suggested he was a “Hitler wannabe.” After the first assassination attempt on Trump, state Rep. Stephen Woodrow expressed that the last thing America needed was sympathy for someone he described as akin to the devil.

Moreover, Democrats have actively sought to undermine Trump through repeated impeachment attempts, aiming to jail him and his supporters. During the 2016 election cycle, President Obama allegedly collaborated with U.S. intelligence to surveil the Trump campaign, hoping to sabotage his candidacy. A fabricated document filled with false allegations was also circulated to tarnish Trump’s reputation. This culminated in an impeachment over what many considered a “perfect phone call” with Ukraine’s president, which was later dismissed by special counsel Robert Mueller as lacking any wrongdoing.

Things escalated further once President Biden took office. Trump faced arrest and indictment on several dubious charges, and his Mar-a-Lago residence was searched by the FBI. The aggressive pursuit extended to his allies and supporters, with reports of wiretaps on multiple senators, including myself. The arrest of Trump associate Roger Stone was broadcast live on CNN, and Peter Navarro faced wrongful imprisonment. January 6th protestors received lengthy jail sentences, and even a pro-life supporter was detained for praying outside a family planning facility. Nonetheless, Trump triumphed in the 2024 election, and perhaps thankfully, returned to the White House, but the troubling precedent set by Biden’s use of the Justice Department still looms large.

Reflecting back, there’s a notable moment from the 1981 Oscars, held just a day after President Ronald Reagan was shot. The same hotel in Washington, D.C., is where Trump faced his own life-threatening situation. During the ceremony, Johnny Carson informed the audience that Reagan was stable, and it was striking to witness the crowd of Hollywood elites erupt in applause. It’s probable that many of them disagreed with Reagan’s views, yet there was once a level of decency that seems lost now. While Republicans still try to uphold those standards, they comprise only about half the population.

The uncomfortable reality is that political violence isn’t distributed evenly between parties. Sure, some Republicans have engaged in acts of violence against Democrats, but it’s far more prevalent on the left. This is highlighted in the so-called manifesto of the man who attempted to harm Trump, where he claimed he wouldn’t allow “pedophiles, rapists, and traitors” to “smear their crimes.” Details of the case will eventually surface, but he doesn’t appear to have been radicalized by a foreign cult; rather, it seems he’s been influenced by mainstream Democratic figures and networks like CNN and MSNBC. It’s time we stop glossing over these issues. Unless there’s accountability for the toxic speech aimed at Trump and Republicans, incidents like this may persist.

You may recall Democrats discussing “unity” briefly after Charlie Kirk’s murder last September. The fundamental issue here is that true unity is impossible with those who wish you harm. There can’t be peace without Democratic leaders like Barack Obama, Kamala Harris, and Gavin Newsom urging their party to cease terms like “Hitler,” “fascist,” “rapist,” and “threat to democracy” when discussing the President. In the U.S., you’re supposed to be considered innocent until proven guilty; however, Trump has never faced conviction for such heinous accusations. This type of dangerous rhetoric only fuels radicalization and violence. It needs to stop.

Senator Tommy Tuberville, from Alabama, came to the Senate in 2020 after a lengthy career as a college football coach, including a decade at Auburn University.
