Leadership Troubles for Keir Starmer After Local Election Defeats
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer might be facing leadership challenges soon, particularly after the Labor Party’s significant losses in local elections this past Thursday.
Labor MP Catherine West mentioned in an interview that if there aren’t any challenges to Mr. Starmer by Monday, she would consider running for leadership herself. She has already formally informed the Cabinet about her intentions.
“I’m putting everyone on alert here. If I don’t hear from some potential leadership candidates by Monday morning, I’ll encourage colleagues in the Parliamentary Labor Party to vote against me. It’s time to get things moving,” she stated during her conversation with the media.
West, who has formerly served as foreign secretary, will need backing from 20% of Labor MPs, which amounts to 81 members, to launch her campaign.
Currently, about ten colleagues are supporting her initiative, and she seems hopeful that more will join her ranks as the pressure mounts.
Despite accepting blame for the losses, Mr. Starmer has resisted calls for his resignation, asserting that he has “no intention of stepping down and dragging the country into chaos.” Yet, he hasn’t entirely ruled out a managed exit and is expected to provide further comments on the matter come Monday.
As it stands, 22 Labor MPs have publicly called for Starmer to either resign or set a deadline for his departure. West noted a lack of clear successors, adding, “There are no candidates. That’s part of the issue.” She expressed surprise that, after extensive discussions about leadership, no one has stepped forward to take on the role.
