Im Sung Jae’s Unfortunate Bunker Shot at Truist Championship

Every golf shot has its own flavor, but some moments definitely stand out. Just ask Im Sung Jae.

During Saturday’s Truist Championship, the two-time PGA Tour champion found himself facing a bunker shot on the par-5 15th hole. It seemed like an ordinary shot—plenty of green to work with—but things took a wild turn when he mis-hit the ball, sending it soaring over the green.

What happened next was a mix of surprising and unfortunate.

Im’s ball crashed into the grandstand behind the green. It looked as though luck might be on his side, heading towards a favorable position. Instead, it rolled back into the bunker from which he had just attempted his third shot.

Im and his playing partner, Tommy Fleetwood, seemed genuinely puzzled by the bizarre turn of events.

He managed to hit his next shot out of the bunker to about 15 feet, but ultimately missed the par putt, leaving the hole with a bogey six.

Grandstands at PGA Tour events have faced their share of criticism when it comes to player safety. Typically, when a golf ball strikes the bleachers, it can lessen the impact, or sometimes even bounce back toward the putting surface—potentially sparing the player from a more disastrous outcome.

Im began Saturday’s third round at the top of the leaderboard but now finds himself four shots behind leader Alex Fitzpatrick heading into the final round on Sunday.

Fitzpatrick secured his PGA Tour card in April after a thrilling victory in the Zurich Classic team event alongside his brother, Matthew Fitzpatrick.
