New Highmark Stadium Set to Open
The Bills’ new Highmark Stadium is set to officially open on September 17th when they face off against the Lions in a Thursday Night Football matchup.
This game marks the first Thursday Night Football event of the season streaming on Prime Video, featuring commentators Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit, as reported by an athletic news outlet.
The development of this new stadium has been in the works for several years following an agreement announced by the state Legislature. This agreement involved the state, Erie County, and the Bills to construct a $2.1 billion facility in Orchard Park, close to the team’s current home.
However, the new stadium has stirred some controversy among New Yorkers. Governor Kathy Hochul allocated over $600 million in taxpayer funds for its construction, with Erie County contributing an additional $250 million towards this private venture. It’s sparked conversations about the financial implications for the local community.
In a 2024 interview, a former adviser to Governor Andrew Cuomo remarked that the deal seemed beneficial mainly for the Bills’ owner, leaving the residents of Buffalo and the state at a disadvantage.
More discontent arose last summer when it was revealed that Bills owner Terry Pegula owns a $100 million superyacht. This surfaced during discussions about public funding for the stadium, especially after Pegula had previously warned about relocating the team if he didn’t receive financial support.
The new stadium will feature an open-air design, and the team has recently branded it by placing the Bills’ logo on its exterior.
With the Bills preparing to transition to a grass field in their new home, they’ll say goodbye to the grass field at their former stadium—renamed Highmark Stadium in 2021, dating back to 1973.
The NFL is set to unveil the full 2026 season schedule during a two-hour telecast on Thursday, which should certainly create some buzz among football fans. Last season, the Bills finished with a record of 12-5 but faced a tough loss against the Broncos in the divisional round. Meanwhile, the Lions concluded their season at 9-8, falling short of playoff contention.
