Brandon Clark Passes Away at 29
Brandon Clark, a forward for the Grizzlies, tragically passed away on Monday at the young age of 29, with the team sharing the news on Tuesday.
While the cause of death hasn’t been revealed, some reports are surfacing, though details remain unclear.
The Grizzlies expressed their deep sadness in a statement, stating, “We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brandon Clark. He was not only a great teammate but also made a significant impact on our organization and the Memphis community.”
They extended their condolences to his family and loved ones during this tough time.
Clark had a difficult season, appearing in just two games due to injuries affecting his knee and calf. Throughout his career, he participated in 309 games after being drafted by the Thunder in the 2019 NBA Draft.
He kicked off his college journey at San Jose State University, where he received All-American accolades and moved on to Gonzaga for a shortened season before entering the draft.
He was traded to the Grizzlies shortly after the draft.
Born in Vancouver, Clark averaged 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds during his time in the league, with his peak scoring average reaching 12.1 points per game. He also finished fourth in the Rookie of the Year voting in 2019-20 and earned All-Rookie First Team honors.
“I am shocked to learn of the passing of Brandon Clark,” stated NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. He reflected on Clark as a passionate and beloved teammate, sending thoughts and sympathies to his family and the Grizzlies organization.
In October 2022, Clark signed a four-year extension worth $52 million. Unfortunately, injuries plagued him during the subsequent seasons; he suffered a torn Achilles tendon at the end of the 2022-23 season and only managed to play six games the following year. A knee surgery last fall further limited his participation.
He returned for two games in December but was sidelined again due to a calf strain, with the team announcing he wouldn’t return for the season in March.
Clark’s representatives shared their sorrow, noting, “We are all devastated by the passing of Brandon Clark. He was loved by everyone and always was there for friends and family. Our hearts ache for his mother and family.” They emphasized Clark’s unique ability to bring joy to those around him.
On the eve of his final season, just before turning 29, Clark made a generous donation of $1,500 to support literacy in a local Memphis school, contributing additional funding as well. He also established the Brandon Clark Foundation in 2025.
Clark aimed to inspire children, often emphasizing the importance of education. “I wouldn’t have gotten this far if I hadn’t focused on reading, writing, and everything else,” he shared last September.
However, he faced legal issues last month, getting arrested on drug charges in Arkansas for trafficking and possession, among other offenses. The status of that case remains unresolved.
