The injuries that hindered Brandon Clarke's career with the Grizzlies

Brandon Clark’s Untimely Death

Brandon Clark passed away on Monday, ending a turbulent NBA career marked by injuries.

The Memphis Grizzlies forward, who was just 29, is believed to have died from a possible drug overdose, which is currently under investigation.

Clark entered the NBA in 2019 after being selected 21st overall from Gonzaga University. He made a strong impression as a reliable player for the Grizzlies during his first three seasons, but injuries later hampered his performance.

In October 2022, he signed a four-year, $52 million contract extension with Memphis, but his 2023 season was cut short in March due to a torn left Achilles tendon. This injury led to a lengthy recovery, limiting him to just six games in the 2023-24 season.

The following season saw him play in 64 games before suffering a serious PCL injury in his right knee. Consequently, he was sidelined at the start of the 2025-26 season. Although Clark returned to the court for two games in December, he was soon ruled out again because of a right calf injury.

During his recovery, Clark expressed optimism about his comeback. In December, he mentioned, “Keep playing basketball. I’m used to not expecting anything. My trainer says I can jump higher than last year. I’m feeling good. I just keep working, and everything will be fine.”

Tragically, on March 24, Memphis announced he would not be returning for the remainder of the season.

In a troubling twist, just six weeks before his death, Clark faced legal issues when he was arrested in Arkansas on April 1. He faced charges related to drug trafficking and other driving offenses.

Reports indicate that the case remained unresolved until his passing.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver expressed his sadness upon learning of Clark’s death. “I am shocked to learn of the passing of Brandon Clark,” he stated. “One of the longest-tenured members of the Grizzlies, Brandon was a beloved teammate and leader who approached the game with great passion and grit. Our thoughts and sympathies are with Brandon’s family, friends, and the Grizzlies organization.”
