Alabama representative labels Clarence Thomas as a 'lynchman' regarding redistricting decision

State Representative Juandalyn Givan launched a harsh critique of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas on Monday, labeling him “Uncle Tom” and a “lynchman” in a passionate video, accusing him of turning his back on the black community.

Her statements were a reaction to the Supreme Court’s decision regarding redistricting, where the justices rejected a 2023 congressional map that would have expanded Democratic seats for the upcoming 2024 election.

This ruling might lead to a problematic map that could wipe out two seats currently held by Democrats, potentially impacting Representatives Terry Sewell and Shomali Figure.

In her pointed remarks, Givan accused Thomas of harming minority representation in Congress, even going so far as to compare him to a slave trader within his own community.

“He must have been the one who sold us out in Africa. It must have been so. His ancestors must have sold us out in Africa and that’s why we are in chains,” Givan stated on Facebook. “He is the man who restored us to our masters.”

She added, “I don’t know what kind of black man he is. What plantation did he come from? What slave ship was he on?”

“You sided with the Republicans. You’re a goddamn straw boss… or Uncle Tom to these people. I don’t understand,” she concluded.

Justice Thomas, who has been a vocal opponent of “racial apportionment” in congressional seats, argues that these practices are discriminatory. His recent decision effectively overturned the map crafted by the 11th Circuit judges, which aimed to give Black voters a better opportunity to elect their preferred candidates in the upcoming May 19 primary.

Givan emphasized that this ruling could lead to the invalidation of two congressional seats and necessitate a new vote based on newly approved maps.
