Spurs’ Wembanyama Shines in Game 5 Victory

SAN ANTONIO — Victor Wembanyama responded impressively after his first career exit, scoring 27 points, grabbing 17 rebounds, and blocking three shots as the San Antonio Spurs triumphed over the Minnesota Timberwolves with a score of 126-97. This win propelled the Spurs to a 3-2 lead in the second round of the series.

Keldon Johnson contributed 21 points, while De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle added 18 and 17 points, respectively, pushing San Antonio a game closer to the Western Conference finals.

If the Spurs win Game 6 on Friday in Minneapolis, they will advance to face Oklahoma City.

On the Minnesota side, Anthony Edwards managed to score 20 points, though he only contributed eight in the first half. Julius Randle and Jayden McDaniels each put up 17 points for the Timberwolves.

Wembanyama had rejoined the Spurs on Sunday after being ejected in the second quarter of Game 4 against the University of Minnesota due to a flagrant 2 foul for elbowing Naz Reid.

The intensity between the teams continued, and with just over two minutes left in the first half, Reid was assessed a technical foul for pushing Wembanyama during a free throw.

This incident seemed to ignite Wembanyama further, but really, he didn’t need much more motivation. He finished 6 of 8 from the field and hit 2 of 3 three-point attempts, racking up 18 points in the first quarter alone.

After a brief tangle with McDaniels in the first, Wembanyama charged the rim and delivered a powerful windmill dunk, showcasing his athleticism.

Although the Timberwolves entered the third quarter on a 14-2 run, tying the game, San Antonio quickly regained control. They had initially led by 18 points in the first half.

As a side note, Minnesota attempted three alley-oop passes to Wembanyama, but couldn’t connect before he reached the basket.

The Spurs reestablished their double-digit lead in the third quarter when Keldon Johnson thwarted a dunk attempt by Rudy Gobert and then hit a short jumper, adding to the scoring surge for San Antonio.
