Chronology of increasing cases of China-related influence in US institutions

A mayor from California has been accused of serving as an agent for China, which has renewed discussions about foreign influence in the U.S.

This incident is part of a growing list of cases that are raising awareness about China’s activities within various U.S. institutions, including local governments and universities.

Here’s a timeline of notable cases under investigation across the country.

Accusations Against Arcadia’s Former Mayor

Former Arcadia Mayor Eileen Wang has been charged by federal prosecutors, who claim she worked under the direction of Chinese authorities to disseminate pro-Beijing propaganda through websites that masqueraded as local news outlets.

An example of her actions includes a communication with a Chinese official who provided her with a pre-written denial of human rights abuses happening in Xinjiang. Shortly after receiving it, she posted the statement online before sending the link back. The official responded with gratitude.

Elected to the city council and rising to the mayoral position in 2022, Wang is expected to plead guilty and faces a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

Officials emphasize that individuals who covertly follow orders from foreign governments weaken U.S. democracy. This case serves as a warning that foreign meddling can reach the most localized levels of governance.

Rep. Swalwell’s Past Under Scrutiny

California Congressman Eric Swalwell, amidst his campaign for governor, is under fire for accepting a significant donation from a lawyer linked to the Chinese Communist Party. Recently, he stepped down from Congress while dealing with sexual misconduct claims.

Moreover, his prior connections with a suspected Chinese agent, Christine Huang, have resurfaced, prompting calls for the release of related FBI documents.

Huang is known to have cultivated ties with young California politicians, including Swalwell, aiding in fundraising for their campaigns before leaving the U.S. during a federal investigation.

Swalwell claims he ceased contact with the FBI following a warning but has not faced any charges. A prior review found no evidence of wrongdoing in this context, yet growing allegations have intensified demands for transparency from him.

“It’s time for Congress to vote to release Eric Swalwell’s FBI file,” remarked Mike Davis. “The risks related to counterintelligence are likely significant.”

Investigations Related to Chinese Influence

Concerns regarding foreign influence are not new, as seen in incidents involving the late Senator Dianne Feinstein, who was warned by the FBI about an employee in her office that might have been targeted by Chinese intelligence.

This raises widespread worries about access that foreign agents could gain through trusted public roles.

There’s increasing urgency among lawmakers about foreign influences, especially in American schools. A report has noted substantial foreign funding, particularly from China, flowing into U.S. educational institutions, sparking apprehensions about transparency and safety in research.

Legislation is being proposed that would mandate schools to disclose foreign funding and curriculum influences, prioritizing parental rights to know such details.

Concerns Over Alleged Chinese “Police Stations”

Federal authorities are also probing suspected Chinese “police stations” operating within the U.S., including in New York City. These outposts allegedly oversee or intimidate Chinese nationals abroad, even attempting forced repatriation.

If validated, such operations would pose serious infringements on U.S. sovereignty and have ignited bipartisan calls for stronger actions against clandestine foreign activities in the country.

A Growing Pattern of Concern

This web of incidents spans multiple sectors of American life—from Congress to local governance to educational institutions.

While not all cases have led to criminal charges, officials are consistently warning that foreign adversaries, notably China, are actively enhancing their presence and influence in the U.S.
