Rep Tom Kean Jr stays away from Congress as he faces a re-election challenge.

New Jersey Congressman Missing from Congress for Weeks

Republican Representative Tom Keene Jr. has been away from Washington for over two months and is set to miss yet another vote, according to confirmation from his office.

“Congressman Keene is dealing with personal health challenges and is thankful for the support he’s received,” stated Dan Scharfenberger, his chief of staff. “He plans to return to his full schedule soon.”

At 57, Keene has not shared when he intends to come back or the specifics of his health situation. His office has consistently claimed that he would resume his responsibilities “immediately.”

Records from GovTrack indicate that no New Jersey Republican has participated in votes since March 5. During his absence, Keene missed all 70 roll call votes in the House, including crucial legislation aimed at preventing government shutdowns and extending essential surveillance tools.

Keene’s absence impacts the House Republican majority significantly, especially since Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) is grappling with tight margins on partisan legislation. There have also been issues with attendance from Democrats lately.

Johnson did speak with Keene by phone in April, expressing optimism for his recovery. “Tom is one of our most dedicated and hardworking members. I appreciate what he has done and will continue to do for New Jersey and our country,” he noted.

Keene faces a challenging re-election in a highly competitive district. The Democratic campaign is ramping up efforts, with four candidates preparing to challenge him in the upcoming June primary.

Interestingly, the New Jersey Republican Party currently has no contender against him as he seeks a third term, receiving backing from former President Donald Trump. The Cook Political Report has recently described this race as a “disastrous failure” for Republicans.

Despite his health issues, Keene’s office remains active on social media. “Our legislative team continues to serve New Jersey without pause,” Scharfenberger asserted.
