Many Americans Do Not Support AI Data Centers Being Built in Their Neighborhoods, Recent Survey Finds

Americans Oppose AI Data Centers in Communities

According to a Gallup survey released on Wednesday, a significant number of Americans are against the establishment of artificial intelligence data centers in their neighborhoods. The poll reveals that about seven in ten respondents oppose these projects, with nearly half expressing strong opposition. Interestingly, only 7% said they were in favor of the data center initiative.

Those opposed to the AI data centers raise concerns mainly about the high demand for resources. For instance, 18% mentioned issues related to water and energy consumption. Additionally, 16% pointed out environmental worries, citing problems like noise, air, and water pollution stemming from data centers.

Further, roughly 20% of those against the data centers also expressed apprehensions about their effect on local quality of life. This includes fears of increased population density, worsening traffic conditions, and the diversion of land from other uses.

Many Americans have publicly voiced their opposition to these plans, underlining issues such as energy and water consumption. The rapid growth of AI has led to a surge in the number of data centers, more than doubling in the U.S. from 2018 to 2021, as noted by the Lincoln Institute for Land Policy.

Reports indicate that global spending on new AI data center projects could surpass $7 trillion by 2030. Virginia, often called the “Data Center Capital of the World,” leads the U.S. in the number of data centers, followed by Texas and California. The World Resources Institute estimates that the top ten states in the U.S. make up around 60% of the nation’s total data centers.

Additionally, a recent incident in north central Georgia involved a data center draining over 29 million gallons of water before local utility companies noticed. This excessive usage resulted in drops in water pressure affecting the surrounding communities.
