CNN revamps its morning schedule with a staff change to connect television and streaming.

CNN is revamping its early morning broadcasts, with Brad Smith, currently the anchor of “CNN Headline Express,” taking the helm at 5 a.m. ET on a temporary basis. This shift reflects the network’s increasing focus on a streaming-first approach.

Smith, who hosts the FAST Channel news roundup show, will fill in as the morning anchor. The Status Newsletter reported this change on Wednesday.

FAST stands for “Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television,” which includes internet-based channels that simulate traditional cable offerings but are free for viewers, relying solely on advertising for funding.

Popular FAST platforms like Pluto TV, Tubi, The Roku Channel, Samsung TV Plus, and Amazon Freevee provide a range of content—including news, sports, and entertainment—at no subscription cost.

A spokesperson from CNN confirmed the updates to morning programming.

This move is part of CNN’s broader strategy to connect its free, ad-supported streaming offerings with the legacy linear channel established by Ted Turner.

Smith’s show is set to air live on CNN’s main cable network at 5 a.m. ET and will then be rebroadcast on the FAST channel at 7 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Having joined CNN last year after experiences at Yahoo Finance and Cheddar, Smith has made a name for himself as a dynamic anchor focused on business and breaking news.

CNN Headline Express launched last year as part of a wider retooling of the network’s streaming service, providing a quick mix of headlines from various categories including national and international news, business, sports, and entertainment.

As traditional cable subscriptions continue to fall, networks are turning to FAST programming in hopes of attracting younger audiences and tapping into new advertising revenues.

Warner Bros. Discovery, CNN’s parent company, has prioritized streaming expansion amid challenges from established linear TV segments.

The early morning slot is vital for cable news networks, serving as both an introduction to flagship morning shows and a testing ground for emerging talent.

It remains uncertain how long Smith will serve in this interim role or if CNN plans to make the change permanent.
