Jason Heyward Joins Dodgers Front Office

Dodger Stadium was buzzing with some familiar faces on Wednesday, including Jason Heyward, who reported for his first day in person at his new role.

The Dodgers have brought Heyward on board as a special assistant in their front office. The former All-Star and Gold Glove outfielder, who recently wrapped up a 16-year MLB career, is looking to pivot into a new chapter at the age of 36.

“I wanted an opportunity to learn,” Heyward shared. “I have a goal of being in the front office one day.”

His interest in front office operations blossomed during the later stages of his playing career. As he matured as a player, he became intrigued by the various complexities of managing a baseball team.

“The last few years, I’ve had to watch different roles, moving around in the bullpen, facing lineup matchups, and things like that,” he explained. “It made me think, ‘Let’s keep discussing this and see what I can contribute to that side as a former player.'”

Currently, Heyward’s role with the Dodgers seems to offer him limitless possibilities. He’s set to explore various departments within the front office, having spent time shadowing the team’s vice president of scouting, David Finley, on his first day. He’ll also visit the organization’s minor league affiliates, working directly with younger players.

“I think it’s great to serve as a communication link and resource for both players and front office staff,” he noted.

Looking ahead, Heyward dreams of perhaps one day being a general manager or taking on the role of director of baseball operations.

“Honestly, I’m not sure what the exact path looks like right now. I came in without much experience, but I’m determined to strive for it,” he admitted.

Most of Heyward’s career was spent with the Braves, who selected him 14th overall in the 2007 draft, and the Cubs, who he helped bring to a World Series win in 2016. However, he also made a significant impression with the Dodgers during his brief tenure there in 2023 and 2024.

During that time, he was instrumental as a veteran presence in the clubhouse. Even though he was designated for assignment late in the 2024 season, just before the Dodgers claimed consecutive World Series titles, many in the organization believe he laid the groundwork for their success.

Manager Dave Roberts expressed enthusiasm about Heyward’s return, stating, “We’re thrilled to have him back. He’ll handle the clubhouse dynamics while collaborating with the front office to understand operations and how things run. He’ll be a tremendous asset.”

After retiring from professional play following a short stint with the Padres last year, Heyward reached out to several teams this offseason about potential front office roles. He felt that the Dodgers provided the best opportunity to learn and grow.

“I recognize there’s a lot to grasp in this new arena,” he remarked. “Having been a player and having that experience should definitely lend some insight. But it’s equally vital to comprehend scouting, player evaluation, research and development, analysis, and terminology.”

“Everything is on the table for me,” he concluded regarding his future. “It’s a process that’s starting from scratch… but I value having the chance to learn what I believe will be beneficial.”
