Liam Hendricks is getting another shot at the majors.
The experienced reliever inked a minor league deal with the Cubs on Wednesday after being let go by the Twins just before Opening Day. This gives Chicago a low-risk opportunity to see if the former All-Star closer can still bring something to the table.
At 37, Hendricks had a tough time during his brief stint at the University of Minnesota’s spring training. He allowed nine hits, five walks, and three earned runs over the course of seven games before his release.
“We’re basically just trying to add depth right now. We want to throw some guys out there who have had a lot of success and see how it goes,” Cubs manager Craig Counsell said, adding, “He’s going to have a way of growing.”
This marks the continuation of one of baseball’s most incredible comeback stories.
Hendricks was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma following the 2022 season. After completing his treatment, he made a remarkable return to the mound in 2023.
Yet, that comeback was short-lived. He had Tommy John surgery after just five games that season and was out for a considerable part of 2024.
Last year, he made a return with the Red Sox, though it wasn’t easy. He struggled to regain his previous form, posting a 6.59 ERA in 14 games.
During his prime, Hendricks established himself as one of baseball’s top relievers, racking up 114 saves with the Athletics and White Sox between 2019 and 2022. He even earned three All-Star selections.
The Cubs’ bullpen has been hit hard by injuries—Caleb Thielver, Hunter Harvey, and Riley Martin are all on the injured list at the moment.
And it doesn’t stop there. The rotation is also facing challenges.
Justin Steele (elbow) and Matthew Boyd (knee) are both on the IL, and Cade Horton will miss the rest of the season due to Tommy John surgery.
Despite these injury woes, the Cubs currently sit at the top of the National League Central Division with a record of 27-15 as of the latest game on Wednesday.
