Claims of Attacks on Black Representation by Democrats
Representative Terry Sewell from Alabama has joined fellow Democrats in asserting that black representation in the U.S. is facing significant challenges. In a recent statement, the Alabama Democratic Party described the situation as a “five-alarm call,” indicating a severe threat to black political representation.
While she didn’t elaborate on this point in her recent message, Sewell referenced the Supreme Court’s decision on redistricting efforts across the country, particularly affecting Alabama. This issue is especially pertinent as the 2026 midterm elections approach.
Per AP: The U.S. Supreme Court has paved the way for Alabama to potentially erase one of its two majority-black congressional districts ahead of the midterm elections.
Alabama officials have pointed to a Louisiana case as justification for the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn previous judicial directions that mandated specific House maps until after the 2030 census. On Monday, the Court reversed the order, instructing lower courts to reconsider in light of the Louisiana ruling, which could enable Alabama to adopt a map approved by the Republican-led Legislature in 2023 that supports only one majority-black district.
Alabama’s Attorney General Steve Marshall commented, “The power to draw Alabama’s map is vested in the people’s elected representatives.” Despite this, Sewell accused Republicans of attempting to “steal” the upcoming election.
“This is a race to the bottom, and we’re fighting fire with fire,” Sewell stated. She emphasized the importance of winning this struggle, asserting that Republicans are trying to silence minority voters.
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York echoed Sewell’s sentiments, reiterating that black political representation is being threatened. She acknowledged the significant role of Black Americans in shaping the American democratic framework, and pointed out that prior to the 1960s, America operated under a system of apartheid.
This perspective aligns with recent polling, indicating Ocasio-Cortez as a leading candidate for the 2028 Democratic primary, although she has expressed that her aspirations extend beyond the presidency.
