Tragic Fall from Carnival Cruise Ship
Efforts to save a passenger who fell overboard from the Carnival Liberty during a Bahamas voyage this week were ultimately unsuccessful.
The incident occurred when the unidentified man climbed over the balcony railing of his stateroom and jumped into the ocean, as reported by Fox News. Carnival, which operates cruises from New Orleans to the Bahamas, confirmed this on Wednesday. They stated that the man leapt off the ship while it was traveling from Celebration Cay to Nassau.
The cruise line noted in a statement, “The crew responded quickly with a search effort and was able to recover the man from the water, but he did not survive.” Sad news.
Additionally, WDSU reported that the company is offering support to the family members who were on board during the incident.
Interestingly, this tragic event marks the second death in a short span of time, following another incident involving an elderly woman who fell from the pier of a cruise ship. Carnival mentioned that on May 9th, while the Carnival Celebration was docked, a woman using a mobility scooter fell into the ocean. Despite immediate efforts by the cruise team to rescue her, she also did not survive.
A spokesperson conveyed their condolences, noting the attempts made to save her life were not enough.
In recent years, there have been several similar incidents involving cruise ships. Notably, in early 2022, the U.S. Coast Guard embarked on a search for a woman who reportedly jumped from a Carnival cruise ship in the Gulf of Mexico. In a different case months later, a passenger fell overboard from another ship on a route from New Orleans to Cozumel, Mexico. Amazingly, rescuers found him alive.
Reports indicated that he showed signs of hypothermia, dehydration, and shock upon being rescued. He was reportedly able to walk but couldn’t explain how he ended up in the water or when it happened. Rescuers were taken aback by how long he had managed to stay afloat, believing he may have spent over 15 hours in the ocean.
