Sexism Allegations at Daily Mail’s New York Office
A recent lawsuit has shed light on troubling behavior at the Daily Mail, particularly involving an editor noted for a “disrespect for women.” Allegations from female employees include instances of extreme hostility leading to a protest where they allegedly smeared feces on the bathroom walls.
The lawsuit, filed in the New York Supreme Court by reporter Marianne Garvey, details claims of “relentless, severe and pervasive sexism” from editor-in-chief Daniel Jones. Garvey states that this issue was widely recognized within the organization, yet upper management failed to address it.
Garvey shared that upon joining the Daily Mail as a real estate reporter in February 2025, she had been cautioned about Jones, who was her direct supervisor. The complaint portrays Jones as having a notorious reputation among colleagues, particularly for his treatment of female staff.
Moreover, the suit accuses Jones of inappropriate behavior, including cheating on his wife at company events and being the subject of circulating photos engaging in lewd actions with women. This mistreatment reportedly reached a boiling point, prompting female employees to express their dissatisfaction in a drastic manner.
According to Garvey, harassment began soon after she started her position. She recounts that about a month in, Jones would frequently yell at her, insisting she “stop talking.”
In one alarming incident, Garvey described how Jones erupted in anger, slamming his desk and yelling inches from her face. She also noted his tendency to make disparaging comments regarding her choices of images of real estate agents, often favoring female agents over male ones based on looks.
Documentation from the case suggests that Jones’s requests crossed inappropriate lines, involving demands for sexualized images and nude photos. Garvey attempted to report this behavior to human resources, but the aftermath didn’t lead to significant changes; Jones received a written warning but continued his alleged misconduct.
Garvey claims that her second report concerning Jones resulted in even further retaliation, with editor Richard Ellis reprimanding her and altering her reporting duties in response to her complaints.
Having previously worked for several other news organizations, Garvey is seeking damages, asserting she is the eleventh employee to experience harassment and retaliation from Jones and Ellis. In her lawsuit, she described the message sent to female employees at the tabloid as clear: “This is not a safe place for you and you are not welcome here.”
At the time of this report’s publication, no comments had been received from the Daily Mail, Jones, or Ellis.
