Louisiana Teen Becomes Youngest Law Graduate
A remarkable teenager from Louisiana has made history by becoming the state’s youngest individual to receive a law degree this past weekend.
James “Jimmy” Chirimigras, at just 18, graduated summa cum laude from Loyola University New Orleans School of Law on Saturday, achieving his Juris Doctor and marking a significant addition to his already impressive list of qualifications.
“What really matters is the effort,” Chirimigras mentioned, stressing the importance of perseverance. “With enough effort and perseverance, most things can be achieved,” he added.
A native of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, Chirimigras has consistently performed well academically. He was home-schooled and completed high school at the young age of 12, subsequently earning both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accounting by 15.
This year, he also plans to become a certified public accountant, potentially earning the title of the youngest person globally to do so.
He began his journey toward a J.D. degree at 15 and celebrated this achievement on Saturday night among about 200 fellow graduates at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans.
“Jimmy has had an extraordinary impact on our school. He is kind, wise, and shows a maturity beyond his years,” stated Loyola Law Dean Madeleine Landrieu, reflecting on his relationships with classmates who admired and learned from him.
Chirimigras finished in the top 2% of his class, earning top grades in 40% of the courses he took.
Entering Loyola, he was recognized as one of the university’s Ignatian jurists and graduated as a William L. Crow Sr. Scholar, which honors the top 10 percent of graduates.
“Completing five distinct course concentration areas while maintaining the highest GPA was the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” he shared. It’s a notable achievement, especially considering he earned five certificates in areas such as tax law, social justice, immigration law, international law, and technology and entrepreneurship.
Believed to be the first to graduate with four or more concentration certificates, his accomplishments have been highlighted as unique within the university.
“I’m very proud,” expressed his father, John. He acknowledged the hard work Jimmy has dedicated thus far. “Watching all the effort pay off and seeing him accomplish what he set out to do has been incredible.”
Despite these groundbreaking achievements, Chirimigras isn’t slowing down. He’s set his sights on attending Northwestern University’s Pritzker School of Law to pursue a Master of Laws (LLM) degree in taxation, aiming to complete his fourth degree by the age of 20.
