Alexandra Fowler Signs with New York Liberty
PORTLAND, Ore. — Thursday marks an important day for Australian forward Alexandra Fowler.
The former University of Portland athlete has filled the Liberty’s last developmental position, signing with New York just ahead of their game against the Portland Fire.
Earlier that day, Fowler took part in the Liberty’s morning practice. It’s uncertain if she will play in the team’s fourth game of the week.
For a while, Fowler didn’t believe she’d have a shot in the WNBA, but a surprising invitation to Liberty’s training camp last month changed that perspective.
She made appearances in both of the preseason games, scoring eight points with five rebounds, one assist, and two steals during her debut on April 25. In the second game, she didn’t score but grabbed two rebounds and tallied three steals.
However, on May 6, Fowler was among those cut to meet the league’s 12-player limit.
Since then, she mentioned she’s been “just chilling” in New York.
“I think the direction of the WNBA, women’s sports, it’s all really encouraging,” Fowler reflected. “Having a space to grow is fantastic—I just want to soak it all in. With many veterans on the team, it’s a great opportunity to learn from them.”
Fowler has had notable achievements, including playing in the WNBL Championship with the Townsville Fire back in Australia. Last season, she participated in 28 games, averaging 10.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and shooting over 51 percent from the floor and 40.5 percent from three-point range.
Her accolades include being named the 2024 WNBL Rookie of the Year and contributing to the Opals’ gold medal win while averaging 11.8 points and 7.2 rebounds. She also earned the Most Valuable Player Award at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Asian Cup.
Prior to her professional career, Fowler had an impressive stint at the University of Portland. She became the program’s all-time leader in points, field goals made, field goal percentage, and rebounds. Additionally, she’s the only player in Pilots history to be selected to the All-West Coast Conference first team four times, leading the conference in scoring.
Starting a new contract in Portland, where her career began, makes this opportunity even more significant for Fowler.
“Life can be quite surprising,” she noted. “I believe it’s going to be an exciting game, especially with so many family members, friends, and staff coming to support.”
In other news, Rebecca Allen has been upgraded to questionable for Thursday’s game after fully participating in shootaround. Her season debut has been postponed due to lingering soreness in her left foot, and she also missed preseason games to focus on rehabilitation.
