Driver who caused the death of Canadian figure skater and Olympian Alexandra Paul in fatal accident sentenced two years after the incident

A truck driver involved in a tragic multi-vehicle accident that led to the death of Canadian figure skater and Olympian Alexandra Paul has received a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence.

Sukhwinder Sidhu was sentenced, alongside a seven-year prohibition on driving, following a fatal crash that happened on August 22, 2023, in Melancon Township, located about 110 miles north of Toronto, as reported by local news outlets.

In February, Sidhu admitted guilt to dangerous driving resulting in death, among other charges, in a local court.

Paul was in a vehicle with her 10-month-old son Charlie when Sidhu’s truck barreled through a construction zone at 106 mph—roughly double the posted speed limit of 37 mph.

Sadly, Paul died at the scene of the collision.

In an unexpected turn of fate, her young son survived, sustaining non-life-threatening injuries such as a broken leg, and was swiftly taken to a children’s hospital. Others involved in the incident also suffered various injuries.

Reports indicated that Sidhu had worked for over 26 continuous hours prior to the crash, driving for at least 16 of those. The judge highlighted that Sidhu had a history of speeding violations leading up to the incident.

Before the sentencing, Paul’s husband, Mitchell Islam, shared the gut-wrenching moment he was informed of Alexandra’s death. He described how a fog of confusion and numbness enveloped him when he received the heartbreaking news.

Gordon Paul, Alexandra’s father, recounted his devastation during his emotional statement in court, expressing sorrow for not having the chance to say goodbye. He mentioned how his daughter had “unlimited potential” and even shifted his own career towards law following her passing in 2016.

Sidhu, who is also a parent, extended his apologies to the victims, taking full responsibility for what occurred. He reflected on the pain that young Charlie would face growing up without his mother, wishing he could undo his actions.

“I deeply regret what happened that day,” he told the court, acknowledging that words alone cannot mend the grief caused by the tragedy.

In deciding on the sentence, the judge acknowledged Sidhu’s previously clean record and strong family support but emphasized that prison time was warranted due to the severity of his reckless driving that day.

Alexandra Paul, a celebrated ice dancer, competed for Canada with her partner Islam in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, where they ranked 18th. The duo began skating together in 2009, clinching the Canadian junior title that same year and obtaining a silver medal at the ISU World Junior Championships in 2010.

Over their senior careers, they also earned bronze medals in the Canadian National Championships held in 2011, 2014, and 2015.

After stepping away from competitive skating in 2016, the couple married in 2021 and welcomed their son Charlie the following year.

Post-retirement, Paul pursued higher education, earning a bachelor’s degree in 2017 and a law degree in 2021, subsequently embarking on a legal career at Barriston Law Firm.
