Ebola Outbreak Confirmed in Congo’s Ituri Province

KINSHASA, Congo — The Africa CDC has confirmed a new Ebola outbreak in the remote Ituri province of Congo, noting 246 suspected cases and 65 recorded deaths thus far.

Most of these deaths and suspected cases are emerging from the Mongwalu and Rwampara health zones, as stated by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in a statement.

The Ebola virus, known for its highly contagious nature, can spread through bodily fluids such as blood, vomit, or semen. While the disease it causes is rare, it is often severe and can be fatal.

According to the agency, four deaths have been linked to confirmed laboratory cases, and there are additional suspected cases in Bunia, which is the capital of Ituri and a stone’s throw from the Ugandan border.

Preliminary lab tests have identified the Ebola virus in 13 of the 20 samples examined.

This outbreak comes just about five months after the prior Ebola crisis, which resulted in 43 deaths, was officially declared resolved.

Ituri, situated in a remote eastern section of Congo, is notable for its poor road conditions and is over 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) away from Kinshasa, the national capital.

The Africa CDC has expressed concern about the potential for the outbreak to spread further due to significant population movement, particularly linked to mining activities in Mongwalu, along with security issues in affected regions, and difficulties in contact tracing and overall disease management.

Furthermore, the locations affected are alarmingly close to Uganda and South Sudan, adding to the concerns.

The agency plans to hold an urgent high-level meeting involving health authorities from Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan, alongside essential partners including U.N. agencies. This meeting will cover immediate response priorities such as cross-border coordination, surveillance, laboratory support, infection control measures, communication strategies, safe burials, and resource mobilization.

Congo’s History with Ebola

This incident marks the 17th Ebola outbreak in Congo since the virus was first identified in the country back in 1976. An earlier outbreak from 2018 to 2020 resulted in over 1,000 fatalities.

Additionally, the West African Ebola outbreak from 2014 to 2016 claimed the lives of more than 11,000 people.

The ongoing situation will likely escalate concerns for Congo, which has been dealing with various militant groups in the eastern regions, including the M23 rebel group, known for a swift offensive last January that led to the seizure of several key cities.

Moreover, violence from the Allied Democratic Forces, a militant group linked to the Islamic State, has taken a toll in Ituri and surrounding areas.

Congo, Africa’s second-largest country in terms of land area, regularly faces substantial logistical obstacles when reacting to disease outbreaks. During the previous year’s outbreak, the World Health Organization encountered significant hurdles in vaccine distribution due to challenges in access and insufficient funding.
