The NFL took several elements into account while organizing the kickoff game for the 2026 regular season, which will showcase the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks facing the New England Patriots. Executives from the league assert that the ongoing controversies involving Mike Vrabel and Deanna Russini did not play a role in their decision-making.
One might wonder if the NFL is truly ignoring significant underlying issues.
“We prioritized the game and the path to the Super Bowl. That’s what matters,” NFL Vice President Hans Schroder expressed during a conference call.
Schroder insisted that the league was not influenced by the recent turbulence surrounding the Patriots, particularly after photos surfaced showing Vrabel in a cozy moment with Russini at a resort in Arizona. This incident led to Russini resigning, erasing her social media presence, and Vrabel facing repeated questions during press conferences. He even missed the last day of the draft in April to spend time with family and seek support in Utah.
“How can we deliver the most thrilling game at the best time?” he articulated, describing the rationale behind scheduling the Super Bowl rematch as the opening game. “In this case, we believed this rematch would generate excitement right from the start.”
“We felt it was important to especially recognize the Seahawks and give them a moment to commemorate their achievements from the past year. Opening the season on a Wednesday with NBC also offered a unique opportunity,” he continued.
This viewpoint aligns with the NFL’s broader silence regarding the Vrabel-Russini situation, with the league previously announcing that Vrabel would not be subject to personal conduct policies stemming from the incident.
Commissioner Roger Goodell remarked during the NFL Draft that this is a matter for the Patriots to tackle.
While the league has opted to remain uninvolved—perhaps a sensible approach—other teams and fans have taken note. Both the Los Angeles Chargers and Minnesota Vikings referenced the hiccup between Vrabel and Russini in their schedule reveal videos, with the Chargers’ commentary drawing considerable attention.
Meanwhile, the Patriots faced an awkward moment when they posted a Mother’s Day message on their social media, with fans contrasting their tribute to mothers against the emotional turmoil the coach may have caused to some families.
And this narrative is unlikely to fade quickly.
With the draft and schedule release behind them, players are now being queried about the coaching situation in press conferences. Even if new photos or developments don’t surface, it’s doubtful Vrabel will completely escape the spotlight on this matter.
Looking ahead, the Patriots are slated to play a preseason game in 2026 along with nine regular-season away games, which might allow rival fans to bring up the situation to New England’s coaches and team.
Unlike the NFL, opposing spectators might carry concerns beyond just football when they think about the Patriots.
