Democratic Candidate Withdraws After Mailbox Incident

A Democrat has exited his primary race following an incident caught on video, wherein he was seen taking campaign materials from a potential voter’s mailbox, as reported by WDRB on Wednesday.

Max Morley, a former candidate for the Kentucky State House and an ex-public school teacher, had previously engaged in various notable political campaigns and served on the Kentucky Education Association teacher’s union board, according to a campaign press release from December. In security footage shared on Facebook, Morley is observed removing an opponent’s campaign literature from the mailbox of Doronda Sutherland.

Neither Morley nor Sutherland has responded to requests for their comments.

The Louisville Metro Police Department indicated that their Sixth Division is investigating the matter and has taken a report.

Morley was set to challenge Democratic State Rep. Daniel Grossberg before the incident led to him admitting to the theft, according to WDRB.

Grossberg has faced several allegations of sexual misconduct, which have triggered an ethics investigation, the removal of his committee roles, and a request for his resignation from Kentucky’s Democratic Governor Andy Beshear, as reported by Kentucky Public Media on Friday.

In response to the accusations, Grossberg has denied wrongdoing, attributing the interactions to his autism and claiming that party officials are exhibiting antisemitism, according to Kentucky Public Media.

Rosalind Welch, Vice Chair of the Louisville Democratic Party, expressed her dismay regarding Morley’s actions, characterizing them as a clear instance of “voter suppression,” as reported by WHAS11 on Tuesday.

Reflecting on the situation, Morley stated, “District 30 deserves a Representative they can trust and believe in. After much reflection, I have decided to end my campaign for State Representative.” He elaborated on Instagram on May 13, saying that campaigns require significant dedication and personal investment, admitting he had lost track of what truly matters: serving the community with the requisite focus, judgment, and integrity.
