New Arrests in MacArthur Park Drug Investigation

Authorities have made five additional arrests connected to the ongoing crackdown near MacArthur Park.

Federal prosecutors have indicated they are intensifying efforts to eliminate the open-air drug trade affecting the area.

U.S. Attorney Bill Esseri announced the latest operation on Friday, explaining that these arrests came after an operation conducted on the night of May 14.

The raid was carried out by narcotics detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Rampart Division along Alvarado Street, right across from the park.

Esseri stated, “We’ve assured the public of a continued law enforcement presence in our parks, and we’re providing an important update regarding outstanding arrests.”

Detectives observed behavior typical of drug sales before detaining five individuals believed to be operating from a nearby business.

During the investigation, officers confiscated fentanyl, prescription medications, and, as reported, a significant amount of U.S. currency.

All five suspects face state charges, while federal prosecutors are deliberating on the possibility of adding federal drug charges in collaboration with the Drug Enforcement Administration.

This is part of an extensive multi-agency operation centered on MacArthur Park, which federal authorities consider one of Los Angeles’ most enduring open-air drug markets.

This follows a large federal operation on May 6, known as “Operation Free MacArthur Park.”

In that raid, DEA agents and federal prosecutors targeted fentanyl dealers linked to gangs within and around the park.

Agents also executed a raid on a stash house in South Los Angeles tied to drug traffickers supplying the MacArthur Park area.

Authorities noted that suspects attempted to flush fentanyl down the toilet as officers entered the fortified apartment complex.

Additionally, federal authorities highlighted that the May 6 operation specifically aimed at members and associates of the 18th Street Gang, MS-13, and the Crazy Riders, who are said to control a significant portion of the fentanyl and methamphetamine distribution in the MacArthur Park vicinity.

During this coordinated operation, authorities arrested 39 individuals and seized nearly 40 pounds of fentanyl, valued at approximately $10 million on the street.
