Virginia Attorney General Disappointed by Governor’s Veto
Virginia’s Attorney General Jay Jones expressed his disappointment after Governor Abigail Spanberger’s recent veto. This came six months after she chose not to cancel the gubernatorial race, despite leaked texts suggesting the murder of a political opponent.
Spanberger’s strong performance in the 2025 gubernatorial election was crucial for Jones’s success. Recently, she vetoed a bill that would have enabled more public employees to unionize.
Jones criticized Spanberger following the veto, stating, “The governor is responsible for making difficult decisions in a job of extraordinary responsibility, and I join union members, home care workers, public servants, and working families across the commonwealth in their disappointment with today’s veto,” in remarks made to local reporter Brandon Jarvis.
Spanberger had also previously refrained from asking Jones to pull out of the October 2025 attorney general race after 2022 text messages emerged. In these, he expressed support for the murder of a Republican lawmaker and his family, making alarming comments about Todd Gilbert, the former Republican House Speaker in Virginia.
During a gubernatorial debate, Spanberger labeled those comments as “abhorrent” but sidestepped questions about whether he would back Jones’s candidacy moving forward.
Later, Spanberger voiced frustration over having to address questions about Jones’s past instead of focusing on his own gubernatorial agenda. “The fact that I have to spend even a moment talking about other people’s text messages from years ago, rather than what I want to do as governor, is very frustrating to me,” he told Katie Couric in an interview.
Interestingly, Spanberger’s campaign store continued to sell merchandise featuring Jones’s name. Despite the controversies, Spanberger won against Winsome Sears by over 15 points and had a substantial lead over Jones, who narrowly defeated incumbent Attorney General Jason Miyares by six points.
Political analyst Bob Holdsworth pointed out that Jones likely wouldn’t have prevailed without Spanberger’s strong showing. “Jones’ fate depends on Spanberger getting a double-digit or near-double-digit win and getting a chance,” he remarked, noting the significance of her influence during that election period.
Reports indicated that Democrats were anxious about a possible split ticket if Jones couldn’t secure Spanberger’s backing.
