Navy veteran Rocky Rochford aims to replace a long-serving official in Tampa Bay.

Navy veteran Rocky Rochford, who served his country for 33 years and holds the title of admiral, is running a vigorous campaign to challenge Kathy Castor, a 20-year incumbent, in Florida’s 14th Congressional District. His aim? To shift Tampa Bay’s political landscape from blue to red.

In a recent conversation, Rochford expressed some strong opinions about Castor’s track record. “Kathy Castor has authored just two bills in the last 20 years, and both simply renamed post offices. I think that shows her ineffectiveness. She hasn’t really done much to help Tampa Bay where it counts. Affordability is a huge concern for everyone—gas, groceries, electricity, insurance. The issues are numerous.”

Highlighting his leadership experience, Rochford emphasized he’s ready to serve Tampa Bay from the get-go. “Leadership is key here. I spent my entire adult life in the Navy and at Massachusetts Maritime College. It’s quite deeply rooted in me.” He added that those in positions of leadership need not just to lead but also to bring faith to the table in Washington, D.C. Communication between differing sides is vital. “If we can’t even hold a conversation, nothing gets accomplished. That’s the situation we have in D.C. right now.”

Children’s rights stand out as a pivotal issue for Rochford. “I’m backing a Children’s Bill of Rights. Kids are our future, and they deserve better protection. Currently, various laws are overseen by 11 different government agencies that don’t communicate, so my bill aims to unify and create stronger safeguards.” He also is targeting issues like online predators and parental rights.

Rochford has voiced concerns about foreign interference in U.S. elections, notably mentioning Neville Roy Singham, a political donor residing in China. “There are influences from abroad impacting our elections—Singham, for instance, receives funding from the Chinese Communist Party with the intent of disrupting America from the inside. This is a serious issue.” He pointed to other nations like Iran, North Korea, and Russia as additional players in this disruption.

Discussing his broad vision for representation in Florida’s diverse 14th District, he stated, “I’m committed to listening—not just to the right, but to the center and the left. If we can’t find common ground, we’re in trouble as a country. We all want a great America that also helps the world.”

Rochford believes that addressing energy policy is crucial for affordability. “Affordability fundamentally stems from energy costs—oil prices affect gasoline and, in turn, impact logistics everywhere. Becoming energy independent is essential.” He emphasized that since the U.S. is a major energy producer, its citizens should benefit from that, rather than suffer from it.

One significant focus for him is the national debt. Rochford claims he’s spent considerable time researching the subject and believes he has a plan to help tackle this by the 2060s. “We don’t want to leave behind a burden of debt for future generations. I went back 40 years to understand the roots of our current predicament and how we diverted from the right path. Balancing the budget only addresses the symptoms; the real issue lies within Congress.” He pointed out that legislation around the debt often lacks the legal framework needed to enforce change.

Rochford concluded with a warning: “If we keep doing nothing, projections say that by the next decade, the national debt could soar to $61 trillion. We need focused and actionable strategies.”
