Colorado Governor Commutes Sentence of Former Clerk
In October 2024, Colorado Governor Jared Polis (D) decided to commute the nine-year prison sentence of former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters, who had been convicted for allowing unauthorized access to the election system.
Polis expressed to Peters that although she received a “normally harsh sentence,” her actions were indeed illegal. Reports indicated that Peters is expected to be released on parole in early June.
“She committed a crime. She deserves a felony conviction,” Polis remarked during a press conference.
Before making his decision, the governor sought an “expression of remorse” from Peters. Recently, she acknowledged her wrongdoing regarding the security of voting machines.
As reported by Breitbart News’ Paul Boyce, months prior to the verdict, a jury found Peters “guilty of giving employee security badges to associates of MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell.”
In August, the same jury convicted Peters for providing security badges that allowed these associates access to the Mesa County election system. Lindell has been a prominent figure promoting unfounded theories about the 2020 election, alleging it was rigged and that voting machines were tampered with to affect the outcome.
Peters faced multiple charges, including “three counts of attempting to influence a public official, one count of conspiracy to commit identity theft, first-degree public official misconduct, breach of duty, and failure to act as Secretary of State.”
Former President Donald Trump has repeatedly called for Peters’ release, accusing local authorities and a “corrupt political machine” of wrongfully sentencing her. In a post on Truth Social, he described Peters as a “73-year-old woman with cancer” who was punished for exposing alleged fraud in the 2020 presidential election.
Trump declared, “Free Tina Peters! Another election, free Tina!” in a March 18 post. He later criticized Colorado’s political environment and labeled the district attorney’s actions as unjust in another message.
“So she went after them for cheating, and these sleazebags put her in jail,” he added, urging for her release again in a follow-up post.
