University of Georgia student Jayden Barreto dies after jumping off a cliff into an Alabama lake to celebrate graduation

A recent graduate from the University of Georgia tragically lost his life after jumping from a steep cliff into a lake in Alabama during a trip to celebrate with friends.

Witnesses noted that 24-year-old Jayden Barreto leaped off Chimney Rock into Lake Martin, approximately 40 miles from Montgomery, but then disappeared below the surface, according to investigators.

“Witnesses reported that Jayden jumped from the rock and did not resurface,” stated Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin.

Emergency responders quickly arrived after receiving word of a missing person. Dive teams tirelessly searched the area for several hours, finally recovering Barreto’s body around 9:45 p.m.

Officials found him on an underwater ledge about 50 feet deep. They noted the lake’s water level had dropped significantly, at least another 70 feet from the height of the jump.

“Jumping off Chimney Rock is a bit like hitting a glass wall from 60 feet,” Franklin explained. “It really depends on how you hit the water.”

The sheriff added, “There’s no indication that this was anything but a tragic accident in which a young man drowned, but we’re still looking into it.”

Barreto’s body has been sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences to establish the cause of death.

Six divers were involved in the recovery mission, which was said to be quite challenging due to conditions on the water.

“Multiple agencies joined forces for a thorough search,” Montgomery Fire Rescue commented in a statement.

“Our hearts go out to his family and friends during this tough time,” they added.

The University of Georgia confirmed that Barreto was set to graduate with degrees in management information systems and psychology in 2025.

Friends shared memories of Barrett, calling him kind and well-liked during a memorial. “Jaden was a pure light in this world. He was dearly loved and will be missed,” one friend wrote online.

“I send my prayers and condolences to Mr. Barrett’s family. My heart feels heavy. Jayden was a remarkable person, classmate, and friend,” another expressed.

“Jaden was a close friend, and knowing him truly enhanced my college experience,” a third friend reflected.
