Controversial Boxing Knockout Draws Attention
In a rather shocking turn of events, the boxing match featured a single punch that ended in a knockout, which has sparked quite a bit of debate.
Viktor Yuruk, aged 26, executed a devastating left hook that knocked out 23-year-old Edwin Castillo during an undercard for the heavyweight showdown between Karen Choukajian and Paddy Donovan on Friday night in Mannheim, Germany.
“I can’t believe it,” remarked DAZN commentator Adam Smith in disbelief following the strike. “I’m not sure why the referee was counting. It was all over in a matter of seconds.”
Some consider this one of the quickest knockouts in boxing history, but not everyone is pleased. Critics point out that Yuruk disregarded Castillo’s apparent effort to engage in a traditional glove touch—often a sign of mutual respect—and instead delivered a powerful punch.
As of Saturday morning, the official time for the knockout remains unannounced.
“He tried to touch gloves and got sucker punched,” commented one user on X.
Another user added, “He’s a real jerk. It seems like he set Castillo up to touch gloves before hitting him.”
“He ignored that gesture and unleashed the hook. That seems so unfair…” chimed in a different observer.
Some noted that Castillo approached in a relaxed manner, making him vulnerable, which Yuruk exploited to conclude the fight swiftly.
After the hit, Castillo lay on the canvas for some time, while Yuruk walked back to his corner as the referee began his count.
In a post on X, I remarked, “You let your guard down, and your movements were way too slow. Remember, you’re in a boxing ring, not a training session—this is serious!”
On social media, there are accusations that Castillo might have anticipated falling, but there’s no solid evidence to suggest any foul play.
The event drew parallels to the infamous 1997 match where Jimmy Sander knocked out Crawford Grimsley in just 1.5 seconds.
As a result of this bout, Castillo’s record fell to 13-3, marking his third loss in four matches. Meanwhile, Yuruk remains undefeated at 14-0, with 12 of those victories coming by way of knockout.
