Jay Bilas Critiques NCAA Tournament Expansion
Jay Bilas, a well-known ESPN college basketball commentator, has expressed his belief that the NCAA’s choice to increase the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments to 76 teams was unnecessary.
The 62-year-old broadcaster stated that he wasn’t particularly invested in the decision since he hadn’t heard anyone actually asking for it. “I don’t want to say I don’t care, but I don’t care,” he remarked. He pointed out that he doesn’t fit the mold of someone who insists on fixing things that aren’t broken. Yet, he added, “I don’t think it was necessary.”
Bilas further emphasized that there was no demand for a .500 team from a major conference to participate in the tournament. He noted that had the expansion been in effect last season, it would have allowed these teams into the mix.
With the new structure, the initial days of the tournament will shift dramatically. An extra eight spots mean 12 games will occur during those two days with 24 teams competing at different locations. Bilas acknowledged that the process might be “a little confusing” for casual fans. He referred to the newly introduced play-in games as “inconsequential.”
“Most fans think the tournament begins on Thursday when 64 teams are set to play,” he commented.
Bilas also mentioned that while hardcore fans will remain dedicated, the play-in games seem somewhat trivial to a broader audience. Winning a play-in game does come with financial benefits for the team, allowing them some recognition in NCAA history, even if some fans don’t give it much weight.
He stated, “It’s fine. I don’t think it’s as significant as others claim. If money is the motivation, I’m okay with that.”
Concerns were raised by some coaches, including UW head coach Danny Hurley, that this expansion could undermine the value of the regular season. Bilas appeared to understand and concur with this viewpoint.
He noted that the ongoing discussion about which teams make the cut has diminished over time. However, he questioned whether including .500 teams from major conferences is a good idea, ultimately deciding it isn’t. “Most of those teams will likely be out by the first weekend anyway,” he reflected.
American Century Tournament Participation
Bilas is set to compete in the American Century Tournament at Edgewood Golf Course in Lake Tahoe from July 10-12. The event has successfully raised over $8 million for a variety of charities. He mentioned that he received his invitation a few years ago, comparing it to a PGA Tour player getting called up for the Masters.
“When I got that invite, I was thrilled,” he recalled. “It felt surreal, almost like a dream.” He expressed appreciation for being invited again, viewing it as a real honor.
Bilas added that the atmosphere of the tournament is special, in a stunning setting with lovely weather, drawing large crowds who come to enjoy the proceedings and mingle with celebrities.
He praised the event’s CEO for cultivating a welcoming, family-oriented environment, highlighting the tournament’s philanthropic goals. The whole affair will be available for viewing on NBC and Peacock.
