Stanford women's basketball team faces claims of a 'toxic' atmosphere in surprising allegations

Stanford’s women’s basketball team seems to be facing significant challenges right now.

Recent allegations reported by a source have cast a shadow over the program. Head coach Kate Paye is accused by former players and parents of fostering a “toxic and dysfunctional environment.”

In a statement to the outlet, two anonymous former players claimed that Paye and his coaching staff led “disastrous team meetings” where intimidation tactics were employed. They mentioned threats regarding scholarship withdrawals and recommendations for graduate school.

It was reported that players were told they were “too weak” for the team. Some of the severe actions that Paye purportedly suggested included withdrawing scholarships or refusing to recommend players for advanced degrees.

The atmosphere was described as retaliatory, with players alleging that if they voiced concerns about treatment, they could find themselves sidelined during training sessions.

It appears many players have had enough. This offseason, seven members of the team entered the transfer portal, which places Stanford among just a few Power Four programs experiencing this level of turnover.

Only five players are slated to return next season.

“My daughters didn’t want to leave Stanford,” said one parent in conversation with the magazine. “It might be portrayed differently, but it wasn’t about NIL.”

On top of these issues, the team’s performance has not been up to Stanford’s usual standards.

Notably, the Cardinal had been a consistent presence in the NCAA Tournament since 1988, when Tara VanDerveer was head coach, including a national championship in 2021. However, they’ve missed the tournament entirely during the last two seasons under Paye’s leadership.

This past season, the team ended with a disappointing 16-20 record in ACC games during Paye’s tenure.
