Trump and Hochul Clash Over LIRR Strike
President Donald Trump has responded to recent events by placing blame on New York Governor Kathy Hochul for the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) strike.
The strike, which began at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, has affected over 3,500 workers across five unions, including engineers and mechanics. This action followed the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA)’s failure to negotiate wage increases, with the MTA warning that the salary hikes could lead to fare increases.
As a result, more than 330,000 Long Island commuters will need to seek alternative travel options or consider working from home.
In a statement, Hochul praised her investments in the LIRR, claiming it is now “more stable than it has been for generations.” She criticized the union’s demands and Trump’s supposed interference.
“The turmoil Long Islanders face starting tonight is a direct result of the Trump administration’s reckless actions to terminate mediation and push negotiations toward a strike,” Hochul stated.
In response, Trump claimed on Truth Social that he was unaware of the strike until the weekend.
“Oiled New York Governor and Dumacrat Kathy Hochul just blamed me for the Long Island Railroad strike, even though she knows full well I had nothing to do with it… No, Kathy, it’s your fault,” he asserted, suggesting that if she is unable to address the problem, he could show her how to improve things.
He further mentioned Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman as a suitable candidate to replace Hochul, predicting a turnaround for the state under his leadership.
Blakeman, the only Republican candidate to challenge Hochul, echoed criticisms of her handling of labor relations, which he argued has endangered the safety of New Yorkers.
“Governor Hochul’s incompetence in handling labor relations… is putting the safety of everyday New Yorkers at risk. Blaming President Trump for the LIRR situation is so disingenuous that it’s laughable,” he commented.
In the aftermath of the strike, the LIRR has indicated it will suspend service indefinitely, advising commuters to avoid unnecessary travel and work from home if they can.
“For essential workers… we will provide limited shuttle bus service during the week,” the LIRR advised.
Additionally, the New York Mets announced a new shuttle service to facilitate travel for fans attending the Subway Series against the Yankees this weekend.
