Pasadena Police Officer Killed in Violent Shootout

Recently released body camera footage reveals the tragic moment a Pasadena police officer was fatally shot during a chaotic confrontation with an armed suspect. This suspect had already caused distress in the community with a shooting near a subway station, in addition to an alleged sexual assault.

The sequence of events began on March 2, around 7:30 PM, when police responded to reports of gunfire at the Sierra Madre Villa metro station. The gunman had shot a victim in the shoulder and subsequently fled the scene.

Shortly after, Officer Brian Vasquez located the suspect several blocks away and engaged in a pursuit throughout the neighborhood.

The footage captures the terrifying exchange of gunfire, with shots ringing out loud and clear in the streets.

Neighbors reported hearing between 15 to 20 shots fired during the altercation, and the aftermath revealed several bullet holes in nearby brick walls.

Despite sustaining serious injuries, Officer Vasquez managed to survive the violent encounter. The suspect, identified as Malcolm Buchanan, a 32-year-old from Pasadena, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Details on the Incident

Police have also shared images of the firearm allegedly used by Buchanan during the incident.

Disturbingly, cellphone footage released by authorities shows Buchanan sexually assaulting a second victim before making his escape.

Buchanan’s grandmother mentioned to a local news outlet that he had mental health challenges and might not have been on his medication during the incident.

Pasadena Police Chief Gene Harris lauded Officer Vasquez for his bravery, attributing his resilience during the life-threatening situation to his military training. “The officer’s actions in that moment could be seen as heroic,” Harris stated. “Any loss of life is always tragic… but we recognize there are inherent risks with such incidents.”

Vasquez, who has served the department for five years, has been released from the hospital but is currently on leave to recover from his injuries. The investigation into the shooting is still ongoing.
