WNBA’s Marketing Strategy Under Scrutiny

The WNBA’s marketing team might want to rethink its approach for a bit. Recently, they opted to highlight rookie Raven Johnson instead of established star Kaitlin Clark in promotional materials for the Indiana Fever’s game against the Seattle Storm. After the game, the box score seemed to settle the controversy.

Caitlin Clark Makes WNBA History: A Shift in Focus

The Fever managed a convincing 89-78 win over the Storm. Yet, the real conversation centered around the disparity between the league’s marketing tactics and the team’s actual performance, especially in light of the absence of another key player, Aliyah Boston.

Without Boston, who was sidelined with an injury just before the game, Clark took center stage. Despite being overlooked in the league’s pregame promotions, she generated buzz with a standout performance, proving to be essential with a team-leading 21 points, along with 10 assists and seven rebounds.

Some observers like OutKick founder Clay Travis pointed out the marketing blunders. He likened it to a hypothetical scenario where Michael Jordan wasn’t featured in promotional graphics during his Chicago Bulls days, suggesting that it’s crucial to market star players effectively. “Sell the Stars! Marketing 101,” he remarked.

In contrast, Johnson, thrust into the limelight as the Fever’s new promotional face, could not translate that hype into tangible results. Coming off the bench, she ended the game with zero points in 17 minutes—a stark reminder of the odd choices made by the league.

Her defensive efforts added depth to the team, sure, but it felt increasingly absurd that she, a rookie, was highlighted, especially on a night when another star player was already unavailable. The big win for Indiana serves as a reminder to the WNBA about who truly captivates the fans.
