Leadership Contender Burnham Alleged to Have Covered Up Grooming Gang Activities

Whistleblower Accuses Mayor of Cover-up in Child Abuse Case

Maggie Oliver, a former police officer and whistleblower on grooming gangs, is alleging that Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is effectively hiding ongoing child sexual abuse linked to Muslim grooming gangs.

Oliver, who previously served as a Detective Constable, claims Burnham’s decision to participate in the Makerfield by-election—a challenge to Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s leadership—was motivated by “political ambition.” She expressed that she would have rather shared a drink with Burnham than Starmer, criticizing Starmer for lacking “leadership and courage” when addressing the issues surrounding predominantly Muslim child sex trafficking rings. These rings often involve exploiting vulnerable girls through addiction to drugs and alcohol, passing them within abusive networks.

According to her statements, while Burnham was candid about past abuses prior to his mayoral term, he may have faltered on dealing with current cases and following through on preventive recommendations. She noted that the fourth review initiated by Burnham—which spans from 2019 to 2025—was, in her view, more of a cover-up than a genuine effort to confront the situation.

Oliver pointed out that victims or survivors had not been consulted over the past seven years concerning Greater Manchester Police’s actions regarding grooming gangs. She stated, “The PR machine was very effective in outlining what was already known. Unfortunately, he turned his back when it came to true leadership and understanding of what’s happening. We missed a significant chance to implement necessary changes.”

This issue has plagued the left-leaning Labor Party, particularly in regions like Rotherham and Rochdale, where the most notorious instances of child sexual exploitation took place. Despite initial hesitance from Starmer concerning a national inquiry into the failures of police and local officials—an act he initially framed as aligning with “far-right” agendas—public pressure ultimately compelled the government to initiate an inquiry with the power to mandate testimonies.

A report released by Dame Louise Casey last year indicated that Pakistani Muslims are primarily responsible for such gang-related crimes, highlighting that authorities had systematically overlooked this fact out of fear of being labeled racist. This pattern appears to be reflected in Manchester, where a 2020 report revealed a police officer was instructed to “include other ethnicities” after arrests predominantly involved “mainly Asian men.”

The topic is poised to impact the upcoming Makerfield by-election, as Nigel Farage, leader of the Reform Britain party, quickly seized upon Burnham’s alleged shortcomings. Farage aims to undermine Burnham’s constructed persona as the so-called “King of the North,” dubbing him a leftover from the Blair-Brown era.

Farage stated, “Burnham has failed the victims of grooming gangs and will fail the residents of Makerfield. He would be a disaster for the economy and betray every Brexit voter in his area. We need to stop Open Borders Burnham.”
