ActBlue CEO to Testify Amid Investigation of Foreign Donations
The head of ActBlue, a major Democratic fundraising organization, is set to appear before a Congressional committee as scrutiny over foreign donations intensifies.
Regina Wallace-Jones has confirmed she’ll testify before the House Administration Committee on June 10, as her organization is currently under investigation, according to a report from Fox News.
House Administration Committee Chairman Brian Still (R-Wis.) stated that Wallace-Jones allegedly deceived the committee during the early phases of the investigation into ActBlue’s fraud prevention measures. “It’s crucial we clarify the facts and provide answers to the American people. I’m eager to hear what she has to say,” he remarked.
A report from earlier in April made headlines, indicating that ActBlue’s legal advisors hinted the platform might have misrepresented the vetting process for foreign donors to Congressional authorities.
The law firm Covington & Burling expressed concerns that this situation could present a “significant risk” to ActBlue, mentioning in a memo the possibility of a criminal probe should prosecutors think ActBlue attempted to hide details about its foreign donation blocking efforts.
In a recent social media update, Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) referred to the investigation as a major revelation of campaign finance corruption and potential foreign interference in U.S. elections, adding that the media, despite public calls for investigation, had been slow to address it.
In a letter to Wallace-Jones, Still noted that the Committee, in coordination with the Judiciary Committee, has been looking into ActBlue’s policies on donor verification and fraud prevention since October 2023.
The committee is exploring potential legal changes to tackle fraudulent and illegal contributions made through online fundraising platforms like ActBlue, believing that as the CEO, Wallace-Jones may have pertinent information.
Fox News also reported that Republicans have accused ActBlue of not adequately responding to subpoenas issued during the investigation last year.
A preliminary report published by House Republicans in April highlighted that all five current or former employees of ActBlue who testified invoked their Fifth Amendment rights a total of 146 times.
Additionally, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, mentioned in a recent interview that ActBlue is a significant force that has accumulated billions for Democratic candidates in each election cycle. He expressed concern over foreign influence, stating, “I don’t want any foreign money in our elections. This should be about the American people.” However, he noted that there seems to be a long-standing issue surrounding foreign influence attributed to the Democratic Party.
