According to a recent YouGov survey, Pizza Hut has emerged as America’s top pizza chain, surpassing Domino’s Pizza in popularity. The survey, which involved over 44,000 diners across the country, was conducted between March 2025 and February 2026 as part of an annual restaurant rankings report. Pizza Hut received 19.1% of the votes, while Domino’s trailed with 17.1%. Following them in the rankings were Papa John’s (11.4%), Little Caesars (5.3%), and Marco’s Pizza (4.7%).
An unusual state is causing a stir in the pizza scene, and surprisingly, it’s not New York. Kenton Valero, senior VP at YouGov, noted that Pizza Hut’s enduring appeal, particularly among older consumers, showcases the brand’s strong presence in Americans’ dining experiences over the years. He suggested nostalgia might also play a role in its continued success.
The survey results underscore how traditional pizza chains still resonate with diners, particularly as preferences evolve in a climate where people are increasingly seeking value and familiar options amid financial pressures. Interestingly, frozen pizza brands and local pizzerias are becoming more competitive, making brand loyalty essential. In fact, frozen pizza sales hit around $7 billion in 2024, as many consumers cut back on takeout.
Moreover, the survey revealed that a significant number of respondents believe local or regional brands outperform national chains. More than 20% of those surveyed expressed a preference for their local pizza shops over the larger chains.
Valero pointed out that the findings highlight the importance of emotional connection and consistency within the pizza industry. While brand awareness matters, it’s those personal connections that often shape consumer choices.
Respondents shared their thoughts on which national brands they deemed best in pizza quality. YouGov’s extensive analysis covered consumer values and preferences across various dining categories.
Pizza Hut, founded in 1958 in Wichita, Kansas, began franchising just a year later and is now headquartered in Plano, Texas, operating around 20,000 stores in over 100 countries. On the other hand, Domino’s Pizza, which opened its first store in Michigan in 1960, currently boasts more than 22,300 outlets globally.
