Kristen Stewart Critiques Hollywood and Eyes YouTube for Future Projects
Actress Kristen Stewart has voiced her frustration with the “capitalist” film industry, which she feels benefits “billionaires,” and is now considering creating content for YouTube.
In a detailed interview with Variety, the former Twilight star shared her candid views on the current Hollywood landscape. “I’m really tired of the rules and this entire system,” she stated, emphasizing that the industry is not structured for artists to genuinely express themselves. “We’re bound by priorities that don’t truly reflect our dreams.”
She went on to explain, “I don’t want to sound overly dramatic, but it feels nearly impossible to produce meaningful work within capitalist constraints. Many decision-makers, particularly those we usually support, don’t resonate with the messages I or my peers are eager to convey.”
While Stewart acknowledged the studios’ efforts in acquiring films at the Cannes Film Festival, she expressed concern that it turned the process into a sort of lottery. “What, are you supposed to wait for a golden ticket? Like, ‘I’ve got a golden ticket! I can make one film!’ We need more effort, more productions, and fewer barriers that just make millionaires richer,” she remarked.
Feeling overwhelmed with the financial demands of the industry, she continued, “It drives me nuts. We’re wasting too much money. The system, frankly, wasn’t built for us. It’s just not feasible, especially since you often can’t even shoot in Los Angeles, where we started.”
As for her next endeavor, Stewart has her sights set on YouTube. “My goal is to create something truly free with my friends by the end of the year and upload it on YouTube,” she said. “I want to create unconventional content, and it’s absolutely okay to do it in a quirky manner. I don’t want to spend five years waiting for someone to hand me a million dollars to make something. I want to start making it tomorrow.”
