Anthropic brings on OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy

Andrej Karpathy Joins Anthropic, Boosting AI Development

Andrej Karpathy, co-founder of OpenAI and former executive at Tesla, has joined Anthropic, marking a notable shift in the competitive landscape of artificial intelligence.

Regarded as one of the leading researchers in AI, Karpathy is now part of a pre-training team. This group is tasked with a significant training initiative aimed at enhancing Claude’s foundational knowledge and skills.

At 39, Karpathy began his role this week at the company founded by Dario Amodei. He’ll focus on utilizing Claude to expedite research in pre-training.

Interestingly, his name recently surfaced in the legal tussle involving Elon Musk, OpenAI, and Sam Altman. Musk stated that he recruited Karpathy from OpenAI to join Tesla, although Karpathy had already intended to leave.

OpenAI’s President, Greg Brockman, said that Musk made an “apology and confession” regarding Karpathy’s transition. At Tesla, Karpathy led the computer vision efforts for the Autopilot team until his departure in 2022, according to LinkedIn. He holds a PhD in computer science from Stanford and has spent recent years developing AI education content on platforms like YouTube and X.

“I think the upcoming years in large language models will be quite transformative,” Karpathy shared in a recent post on X. “I’m thrilled to rejoin the research and development scene. I still have a strong commitment to education and hope to return to that in due time.”

Anthropic also announced the hiring of Chris Rohlf, a cybersecurity expert, to its Frontier Red Team, which evaluates AI models against various threats. Rohlf previously worked as the Director of Security Engineering at Meta.

Based in San Francisco, Anthropic has quickly become a favorite in the AI field, especially with the growing reputation of its Claude tool, which has attracted significant investments. Their new Mythos model is generating both excitement and concern regarding the potential of modern AI technologies.

In a surprising turn, a Silicon Valley investor was reportedly so eager for shares in Anthropic that he offered his 14-acre land parcel in exchange.

Karpathy will collaborate with Nicholas Joseph’s team focused on pre-training. “His plan is to leverage Claude for accelerating our research,” Joseph mentioned on X. “I truly believe he’s the perfect fit for this role, and I’m eager to see what we accomplish together!”
