Woman dies after falling into an open manhole in Midtown Manhattan

Tragic Manhole Incident in Midtown Manhattan

A woman lost her life after falling into an open manhole in Midtown Manhattan late Monday night, according to police reports.

The 56-year-old victim was discovered unconscious inside the manhole located in front of 653 Fifth Avenue, near East 52nd Street, shortly after 11:19 p.m. on Monday, as detailed by the NYPD.

Authorities arrived after receiving a 911 call and found her in the manhole on the grounds of the Midtown North Precinct, an area known for its bustling shopping and tourism, filled with upscale stores, hotel establishments, and office skyscrapers.

She was rushed to New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center but was later pronounced dead. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an investigation to determine the cause of death.

The identity of the deceased has yet to be disclosed as officials await proper notification of her family.

It’s unclear why the manhole was open or whether construction was ongoing in that vicinity when the incident occurred. Con Edison, the New York City-based energy company, has initiated its own inquiry regarding the circumstances surrounding her death.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm that a civilian has died following a fall into an open manhole,” a spokesperson for the company expressed. “We are actively looking into how this occurred.” They extended their condolences to the family, reiterating that safety is their highest priority.

The NYPD noted that no arrests have been made thus far, and the investigation is still ongoing.

Family members of the woman were seen at the scene the following morning, visibly upset and seeking clarity about how this tragedy occurred. They were observed comforting one another amidst the distress.

According to the woman’s daughter-in-law, there were no apparent warning signs or coverings on the manhole, as they tried to come to terms with the incident.

The area surrounding the manhole remained partially blocked off as investigators continued their work on Tuesday morning.
