Playoff Redemption for Jarrett Allen
It became quite the meme.
Jarrett Allen’s candid remark turned into a memorable quote after he and the Cavaliers faced a tough defeat against the Knicks in the first round of the 2023 playoffs. “The lights were brighter than I expected,” he noted at the time. Since then, his words have often been used to comment on players who struggle during crucial moments.
Now, though, Allen has an opportunity for redemption. Here he is again, three seasons later, facing the Knicks once more, this time in the Eastern Conference finals at Madison Square Garden.
During the Cavaliers’ shootaround before Game 1, Allen reflected on his previous comment, saying, “That comment was that comment. That’s what I said. For me personally now, I’ve grown, I’ve evolved, I’ve been through more playoff series, I’ve played more games. What I said then, I said then.”
The dynamics of both teams have changed a lot. Back then, both the Cavaliers and Knicks were considered underdogs, having missed the playoffs in prior seasons.
“Everyone has evolved, everyone has grown, everyone has come back to themselves,” Allen remarked. “It’s good to see how everyone develops.”
Interestingly, the Knicks’ lineup has undergone significant changes, bringing in players like Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges. Meanwhile, key Cavaliers’ players—Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, and Allen—remain intact. In fact, there was even speculation about acquiring James Harden during the season, suggesting a desire to strengthen their core.
Dean Wade and Sam Merrill were both part of the team last season, but Wade saw limited play, while Merrill didn’t hit the court at all. Now, they play crucial roles off the bench for the Cavaliers.
Mitchell noted, “For most of the team, the core players that were there, it was their first time being in the playoffs. We have prepared several series since then. Obviously, we didn’t like how it turned out. This is different. We are not here to rehash the past.” He emphasized that moving forward is the priority and they’re ready to take on the challenge ahead.
This matchup has been highly anticipated all season, and it seems that many in the NBA community expected it. They were originally slated to meet in the league’s opening night game and again on Christmas Day, sporting strong preseason odds to win the East.
However, the road to this point has felt quite surreal for both teams. The Cavaliers struggled in the season’s early stages, while the Knicks faced their own challenges.
Mitchell shared, “For us, I don’t think we said, ‘It’s going to be us versus New York.’ We were really just focused on ourselves. Right now, I feel like I have to steal the first one. And if I don’t steal the first one, I steal the second one. That’s the mentality. We’re here to win, not just to enjoy the moment. This is our chance to get to the finals, and we have to get through them to get there.”
