Update on Islamic Center shooting: Mosque security stopped gunmen 15 feet from classrooms, protecting 140 children

Tragic Shooting at Islamic Center in San Diego

On May 18, 2026, a tragic shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego resulted in the deaths of three individuals. Two teenage gunmen, who later took their own lives, inflicted the violence before police responded to the scene.

The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) has announced plans to enhance police visibility at places of worship in the county. Police Chief Scott Wahl stated during a news conference that the goal is to ensure safety within these community spaces.

Wahl mentioned that they would not be releasing the names of the victims at this time, but emphasized the dedication of law enforcement to provide a secure environment.

“We want everyone to feel safe in their places of worship,” he affirmed.

One notable response came from Amin Abdullah, a security guard at the center. Wahl praised Abdullah for his bravery in protecting over 100 children present when the gunmen arrived. Abdullah confronted the suspects, engaging them before he was fatally shot.

“His quick actions prevented these individuals from entering areas with many children,” Wahl explained, highlighting the grave nature of the situation.

According to Chief Wahl, the other victims, drawn outside by the gunfire, met tragic ends in the parking lot. It was a “massive response” from the police, he noted, that forced the suspects back to their vehicle, stopping further potential casualties.

“I want to stress that these victims did not die in vain,” he asserted. “Their actions played a crucial role in averting greater loss of life.”

Imam Taha Hassane, leading the Islamic Center, expressed deep sorrow for the victims, referring to them as “brothers.” He particularly honored Abdullah as a “kind person” who was always cheerful.

“His heroism truly made a difference that day,” Hassane said, projecting pride and admiration.

Hassane also identified Mansour Kaziha, the first to call for help, as a key pillar of the community. He recalled Kaziha’s long-standing dedication to the center since its founding.

“He was a crucial part of everything we did,” Hassane remarked, reflecting on his invaluable support over the years.

Another victim, Nadir Awad, who often visited the center because of his wife’s involvement there, also rushed to help during the shooting.

“He heard the chaos and rushed to protect,” Hassane recalled.

Hassane, who was present during the incident, expressed his disbelief that such a tragedy could occur at the center, despite ongoing acts of hate towards the community.

“We never anticipated this kind of crime here,” he noted, highlighting their ongoing security measures.

Federal authorities confiscated numerous firearms, including rifles and a crossbow, during searches related to the suspects, alongside tactical gear and ammunition.

“The individuals involved appeared to have been influenced by extremist ideologies,” noted Mark Remily from the FBI.

San Diego’s Mayor, Todd Gloria, condemned the actions of the perpetrators, emphasizing that they do not represent the community.

“This is a time for unity and support for our Muslim brothers and sisters,” he stated, acknowledging the shared pain of the incident.
