Kylie Minogue Opens Up About Her Second Cancer Battle

Kylie Minogue shared in 2021 that she faced cancer privately for the second time, a significant moment considering her first battle with breast cancer started in 2005. Thankfully, she was treated successfully then.

“I received my second cancer diagnosis in early 2021. I managed to keep it to myself, and, well, it’s quite different from the first experience,” the 57-year-old pop icon conveyed in her latest update, tied to her documentary released on Tuesday.

“I’m relieved to say I got through it. Again. Everything is okay now. Life is unpredictable, isn’t it? But, music fuels my spirit… my love for it is stronger than ever,” she added.

Minogue disclosed that her second diagnosis came after a routine health check.

“You know, it’s a gentle nudge for some people to consider getting that health check. Early detection made a huge difference, and I’m forever thankful to say I’m healthy now,” she remarked while promoting her documentary.

After her treatment, she celebrated success in 2023 with her Grammy-winning song “Padam Padam.” Yet, she admitted it was challenging to find the “right moment” to speak publicly about her diagnosis.

“I never felt compelled to share. Honestly, during that time, I was just a shadow of myself,” she reflected.

“There were days I didn’t want to step outside. ‘Padam Padam’ opened so many avenues for me, but I really understood that cancer wasn’t just a passing issue in my life. I felt this desire to share what happened and let it go. Every opportunity to speak felt like, ‘Maybe this is the moment,’ but I just held onto it,” she explained.

Interestingly, in her 2023 song “Story” from the album “Tension,” she alludes to a “secret” struggle she dealt with privately.

“I had a secret I kept close… Turn the next page, baby, come on stage,” some lyrics from the song express.

In her documentary, Minogue revealed she wanted to address this personal chapter because it “needed to define that phase of her life.”

When she was first diagnosed with breast cancer at 36, it led her to cancel the remaining dates of her Showgirls Best Hits tour and miss her headlining performance at Glastonbury that year. She began treatment in Melbourne and was declared cancer-free in 2006.
