Joey Chestnut admits guilt following altercation at a bar

Joey Chestnut’s Recent Legal Issues

Joey Chestnut, known for his competitive eating, is in the news again—this time for reasons beyond just hot dogs.

He recently pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor battery charge. This came after an altercation at a bar, which was first reported by Us Weekly. Chestnut received a sentence of 180 days of probation.

This 42-year-old, famous for his victories at the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, will still be able to travel outside of Indiana, his home state, despite this legal trouble. It seems he plans to return to Coney Island to defend his Mustard Belt title while on probation. “There are no limits,” he said in a conversation with USA Today.

According to an affidavit, the incident occurred when a man recognized Chestnut at a bar in March and approached him. Allegedly, after shaking hands, Chestnut struck him with an open hand. Witnesses said that after the hit, Chestnut remarked to the man’s friend, “Look, your friend is mad.”

The dust-up apparently happened around 2 a.m. The victim reported that Chestnut punched him in the face post-handshake. The next day, Chestnut told the police he didn’t recall the events clearly, attributing it to being “very intoxicated.” Security footage later confirmed the confrontation, showing Chestnut approaching and hitting the man.

Chestnut entered his guilty plea on April 20.

His attorney, Mario Masilamani, stated that his client accepts full responsibility for the misunderstanding. He emphasized that Chestnut aims to engage with fans in a positive manner but acknowledged that things took a wrong turn this time. There’s a commitment to avoid similar situations in the future.

Interestingly, Chestnut made headlines before this incident for skipping the 2024 Nathan’s Contest over sponsorship disagreements with Major League Eating. However, he was back in 2025, reclaiming his title by consuming 70.5 hot dogs and beating reigning champion Patrick Bertoletti by a significant margin of 20.

Despite these legal challenges, Chestnut’s ability to travel remains intact. In fact, he recently visited Long Island for a promotional tour and enthusiastically commented on the quality of their bagels, claiming they “might be the best.”
