Jay Bilas believes the NIL era enhances college basketball like never before

Jay Bilas argues that NIL has not destroyed March Madness, even with increasing concerns.

Jay Bilas Discusses NIL’s Impact on College Basketball

In recent commentary, ESPN broadcaster Jay Bilas highlighted how the name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals have transformed college basketball for the better. Bilas, who is 62, noted that these deals allow players to remain at their schools for longer periods while receiving financial compensation.

“I don’t think the sport has ever been in a better place. Players are, frankly, better than they’ve ever been,” Bilas remarked. He added that the ability to earn money through NIL has encouraged athletes to further their education and enhance their skills instead of jumping to professional leagues prematurely.

He mentioned that if musicians or actors were allowed to earn while learning, they’d likely receive widespread praise. In his view, the NIL has broadened the talent pool, giving opportunities to programs that may not have had it before, like Indiana, which he couldn’t have imagined winning a championship in earlier times.

Bilas referenced the shift in college team composition, suggesting that longer player tenures are elevating competition levels. He pointed out that with the current system, more players are willing to attend schools where they can secure starting positions rather than being benchwarmers elsewhere.

However, while Bilas supports NIL, he believes that players still aren’t compensated fairly. He feels they’re moving closer to what they deserve but that there’s still more progress to be made. He also drew attention to the double standards in how fans react to player versus coach transfers, noting that complaints seldom arise when coaches move, contrasting with the scrutiny players face.

Bilas will be participating in the upcoming American Century Tournament in Lake Tahoe, scheduled for July 10-12, which will air on NBC and Peacock.
